I was talking with a colleague recently about the topic of their professional identity. It occurred to me that their search was for a vocational label, a title of sorts.
Am I a mechanic? A farmer? A butcher, baker, or candlestick maker?
In a flash of inspiration I said, “Perhaps your identified interests are clues to your identity. What interests do you have?
Without hesitation, that they knew.
“I’m interested in books, in reading, in illustration, in film. I like food & cooking.”
I said that might be your identity: you are a person interested in books, in reading, in illustration, in film. You like food & cooking.
Maybe that’s enough to start with.
The other question is: how can I earn a living if those are my interests? My colleague has decided that working for others is not the route for her. She has chosen the road less traveled, the path of self employment. In particular that of a self employed creative artist.
